How A Simple Story Can Change Your Life

How A Simple Story Can Change Your Life

Even though I started playing instruments when I was in elementary school, it really wasn’t until I was in college that I started studying music seriously (music theory and composition).

I started taking piano lessons for many, many years from the age of 13. This is a bit late for most musicians since most of them begin when they’re around 5, but I did pick up the instrument very quickly.

It’s an interesting story how I got into piano as my main instrument of choice. I played trumpet all throughout elementary, middle, and high school. But at some point down the line I realized that trumpet wasn’t really what I wanted to do for a living.

I actually gave up the trumpet after ten years of playing so I could focus on piano and music at a local community college where I grew up. It was a difficult decision to make, but why waste time doing something that’s not going to give your life value?

When I was in the 7th grade I watched the movie Groundhog Day (to this day being one of my favorite movies of all time). There was a scene in this movie where Bill Murray is sitting at a café drinking coffee and he hears Piano Sonata No. 5 in C Major start playing by Mozart.

At the moment I heard that beautiful classical music, I knew I wanted to start taking lessons. Sadly this scene is cut out when aired on television, so if you want to see the original scene I’m talking about you’ll have watch it on DVD.
